Setting:
This book is a fantasy/adventure novel that takes place on the magical island of Artímé and the non-magical part of the island, Quill. Artímé is part field, where a large mansion is, and part dark jungle. Quill on the other hand is one large, fortified city, surrounded by dry land. It takes place after the first book, The Unwanteds. (If you have not read The Unwanteds, you should go do so now) The first book left off with the death of High Priest Justine, and the exposure of Artímé. The main character is still the same, being the middle school aged boy, Alex Stowe.
Plot:
After the death of the late High Priest, Unwanteds and the people of Quill live together. But when the Stowe twins both receive shocking pieces of information, both of their world’s are suddenly changed. Aaron is relieved of his position in the Quillen government and is sent back to university. Soon after that, he is sent to the Ancients Sector. Aaron is shocked by this news, and camps out in High Priest Haluki’s house. There he slowly gathers followers, one by one, plotting his takeover of Quill. Alex is told by Mr. Today that he plans to take a holiday and is taking Alex on as his apprentice. When Alex agrees to lead for only a short time, he starts to realize who Mr. Today wants as his successor. But on top of all that, two mysterious strangers wash up on the shores of Artímé, wearing strange pointy necklaces, not being able to speak, and having the bright, orange eyes. When Alex’s friends travel to another island, and only one can be saved, what will Alex choose his friends, or Artímé?
Recommendation:
I recommend this book, because it is, in my opinion, one of the best, non-excessive-creepy/gory/bloody fantasy series I have every read. They do fight a lot against Quill, and other things, but it is never that bloody and stuff. In book 7, there is a major battle, which does have some blood, but not a lot. Also, I feel like there is a good story line, and good characters, such as Mr. Today. (He is my favorite character that you know of, and if I said my true favorite character, it would spoil a lot.)
