Setting:
This book takes place from 1975-present in America. This book is about and was written by David Goggins, a ultra marathon runner and a former Navy Seal. The genre of this book is non-fiction, and it is an autobiography. There is a sequel to this book.
Plot:
David Goggins's early childhood was a mess. His father was abusive, and his mother eventually ran away with David and his brother. David did not do well in school, and cheated his way through middle and high school. He faced racism throughout his teenage years, and eventually wanted to become an Air Force pararescuer. David then made a complete turn around in his life, studying hard and working out even harder. He was accepted into pararescue training, but he began to look for a way out after starting water training. David was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Trait, which allowed him to quit. A couple years later, he wanted to become a Navy Seal. At the time, David weighed around 300 pounds, and did not qualify. He began to put in a vast amount of work and lost 100 pounds in three weeks. He was accepted into Basic Under Water Demolition/Seal (BUD/S) training, which was tougher than he could have ever imagined. David survived Hell Week, which is one of the most intense parts of (BUD/S) training, but was diagnosed with pnemonia. However, this didn't stop David. He tried again, only to end up with a broken knee cap. He finally completed his training on his third attempt. After serving as a Seal for a couple of years, David got into ultra-marathon running. After a couple almost-failed attempts at other ultra-marathons, he ran the Badwater 135, which is a 135 ultra-marathon that goes throught Death Valley. Since then, David has run multiple ultra-marathons and competed in the Iron Man Triathlon. He used to hold the world record for most pull ups in 24 hours, which took him 3 attempts. David Goggins continues to do stunning physical feets, and has inspired many others by becoming an active public speaker.
Recommendation:
I loved this book. David Goggins' perspective was very intense, but also very inspiring. His story of perserverance agasint all odds is truly amazing. Throughout the book, David gives challenges to help you achieve your goals. There are some pictures of his hands and feets after marathons that are pretty gross, but otherwise this is a great book.
